Chapter summary of "Shay"

Tally is fleeing the crime scene, but it is hard to weave through the middle Pretties that were called in to search for her. She is ready to make a dash toward where she crosses the river when she sees someone in the shadows, and guesses it's a guard. She is prepared to surrender when she realizes it is another Ugly. Her name is Shay. They talk for a while, and then cross the river. Shay uses her hover board to do this. This is a new way to cross for Tally, and she becomes interested.

Shay is like Tally in a lot of ways. She sneaks out to spy on the New Pretties, and I think they will become good friends while waiting to become Pretties.

I think New Pretty Town advocates bungee jumping because it isn't what people would normally do. It's out of the ordinary and thrilling. They also bungee jump to get off of the building for fire drills.

Bungee has quite an old origin. The idea of this way of jumping comes from the ancient ritual "Gkol" performed in the Pentecost Island in the Pacific Archipelago of Vanuatu. The legend says that in the village Bunlap a man called Tamalie had a quarrel with his wife and she ran away and climbed a Banyan tree where she wrapped her ankles with liana vines. When Tamalie came up to her, the woman jumped from the tree and so did her husband not knowing what had his wife done. So he died but the woman survived. The men of Bunlap were very impressed by this performance and they began to practise such jumps in case they got in similar situation. This practice transformed into a ritual for rich yam harvest and also for proving manhood.
Modern bungee jumping as we know it today actually started on the 1st of April ( Fools' Day ) 1979 when group of people from the Oxford University Dangerous Sport Club, impressed by a film about "vine jumpers", jumped from 245-Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, England. Using nylon braided, rubber shock cord instead of vines, and dressed in their customary top hat and tails, they performed a four man simultaneous jump .The enthysiasts promptly were arrested for this. But at least hit the world press the next day. The new adrenaline mania has been started. The D.S.C. performed many other jumps, including one off the Golden Gate Bridge. In early 1988, A.J. Hackett and Chris Allum, opened the first commercial jump site in Ohakune, New Zealand. Hackett also made a great commercial show in 1987 when he jumped from the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Tally:

-3 months younger than Peris

-Peris was her best friend before he turned Pretty

Peris:

-3 months older than Tally

-is a Pretty

-used to accompany Tally on her trips to spy on the Pretties

Tally and Peris used to be best friends, but now I'm not so sure. They used to have a good relationship, but once Peris moved away, he got used to being a Pretty. He didn't need Tally to have fun. Peris didn't have their best friend mark anymore. He didn't even seem happy to see Tally there. They may have been true best friends, but I think Peris outgrew Tally.

Oxymoron- pg. 3-"A few hot air balloons pulled at their tethers against the darkening pink sky, their passengers shooting safety fireworks at other balloons and passing para sailors."

I think Tally chose to wear a mask to hide from the Pretties because she was an Ugly still.

Masks generally are worn with a costume, often so complete that it entirely covers the body of the wearer. Fundamentally the costume completes the new identity represented by the mask, and usually tradition prescribes its appearance and construction to the same extent as the mask itself. Costumes, like the masks, are made of a great variety of materials, all of which have a symbolic connection with the mask's total imagery. This relates to Tally's decision because it shows that masks are used to hide people's real faces. That is the way Tally used the mask.

No, I have never had a friend like Peris that abandoned my friendship. I've only moved once, and we all keep in touch. Or at least all my good friends and I do.

I define beauty as a characteristic or quality that someone finds attractive in someone else. Beauty is not just good looks. If everyone was beautiful, no one would be considered beautiful. Just like if you didn't have any bad days, you wouldn't know a good one.

I think Brussels sprouts are ugly because they are ugly looking and so disgusting tasting. They are my least favorite food. I think the rose is beautiful because it has such a pretty color and it smells sweet.
